Step 2 Printable Canvas blog showing you how to prepare artwork for canvas making

Before you get started with your printable canvas, there are some important things to think about when setting up your canvas artwork

There are some important things to think about when setting up your canvas artwork:

1. Size of the finished canvas.
What size do you want the finished canvas to be? – you will need to correct sized canvas bars to produce this.
2. Thickness of your stretcher bars.

What thickness do you want your canvas to be? – canvas stretcher bars usually come in 2 thicknesses, 18mm and 38mm. For 18mm bars add 1 inch to the finished sized artboard on all 4 sides, for 38mm bars add 2 inches on all 4 sides.

3. If you want the finished canvas to be “full wrap” “partial wrap” or “no wrap”.

Once you have your finished size and bars thickness decided you can set an artboard in your design software, set the finished size and then another box showing the extra border for the stretcher bars. Please see the diagram below showing this.

Now we can play around with our image to see how it can fit the space.

As you can see the first image with a full wrap will not work as we lose too much of the detail around the stretcher bars leaving little detail on the front.

We now have options of either a partial wrap with the image just around the front edge or no wrap with either a plain white border or coloured border for a different effect. See the images below:

Partial Wrap - No Wrap white edge - No wrap black edge

This is a different image that will work perfectly on a full wrap canvas.

As you can see the important details are contained within the front of the finished canvas while the rest of the image can safely go around the stretcher bars.

Setting up canvas artwork for you Printable Canvas can be a little tricky depending on the required size, style and image so you may have to tweak one of these to get the desired finished results
