Which Application Tape Is The Right One To Use For Printed Stickers

You’ve created a cracking vinyl sticker design; it looks awesome and is just what the client wants. But how do you get it from the backing sheet onto the final surface without messing it up?

That’s where application tape comes into its own. But as with all these things, not all application tapes are created equal, and choosing the right one for your stickers is just as important as selecting the right vinyl or printer. Whether you’re transferring decals onto windows or working with intricate designs, selecting the right application tape ensures a smooth, clean result.

With different types on the market, how do you know which one is right? Here we take you through the different types and the best ones for your project needs.

What Is Application Tape?

For the uninitiated or those new to printing, application tape, also known as transfer tape or pre-mask tape, is used to lift your cut and printed vinyl stickers from their backing sheet and transfer them to the final surface without losing or damaging the graphic.

It holds all the elements together, making it easier to position or align your graphic in one go and reducing the chances of reapplication due to misalignment.

Types Of Application Tape For Stickers

Paper Application Tape

Paper tape is the most common and most budget-friendly tape available. It’s easy to tear by hand, semi-transparent and suitable for many uses. It’s great for things like simple, printed or layered stickers.

Paper application tape is affordable and easy to use. However, the semi-clear nature of the tape can make it harder to align designs. It’s also not ideal for wet applications.

Clear Application Tape

Clear application tape lets you see the design you’re moving, which enables you to keep it aligned more easily. This is good for intricate or multi-layered designs where you need to see exactly where everything is throughout the entire process.

It gives you excellent visibility and is great for layering logos. However, it can be more expensive and trickier to handle in humid environments.

High Tack vs Low Tack

Application tape comes in high, medium and low tack versions. Which one you use will depend on the nature of the job. High tack will grip the vinyl firmly and is more suited to glossy or textured vinyl. Medium or low tack tapes are more suitable for delicate/small decals or if you’re using heat-sensitive materials.

For most printed stickers on smooth vinyl, medium tack tape is the safest option. For thick, glossy or UV-printed stickers high-tack tape may be a better option.

How To Apply Your Application Tape

  1. Cut and weed your printed vinyl sticker
  2. Layer the application tape for stickers over the graphic, adhesive side down
  3. Use a squeegee to press the tape onto the vinyl and remove the air bubbles
  4. Peel away the backing and ensure the design lifts cleanly with the tape
  5. Position the sticker and press it onto the surface
  6. Squeegee again and peel away the transfer page

Ultimately, the best application tape depends on your sticker size, the type of vinyl used, how it has been printed and whether you’re applying it wet or dry. For glossy or laminated prints, especially those printed on a latex or UV printer, high-tack tape is preferable. For monomeric vinyl or a matt finish, low-tack tape is more suited to the job.

Getting it right, though, avoids misalignment, air bubbles and wasted product with you having to start afresh. A small test run can save you time and money, especially when it comes to premium printed graphics.
