Ink Matters: The Differences between UV Ink VS Eco-Solvent

For professional printers, the type of inks you choose can have a huge impact on print quality and media compatibility. The type of printer being used will also dictate the ink required. Two of the most popular options are eco-solvent ink and UV ink. While these inks both offer unique advantages, understanding their differences can help you make the right choice for your business and ultimately help you pick the right printer for your needs.

What Is Eco-Solvent Ink?

Eco-solvent ink is an oil-based ink made from ether extracts taken from refined mineral oil. As they are made from biodegradable solvents they contain less volatile organic compounds (VOCs) than traditional solvent inks and are odourless, making them a more eco-friendly alternative.

They are widely used for different print applications such as vehicle wraps, banners and outdoor signage, enjoying robust weather resistance and excellent colour vibrancy. However, they also require more heat to dry them than normal inks which can affect the substrate underneath. For example, if you’re printing on thin vinyl the drying process may cause warping of the material if it’s not held securely in place.

This longer drying period before lamination or use can also slow down the speed of production, especially in a high-demand environment.

What Is UV Ink?

UV inks, unlike eco-solvents, are dried or cured under a UV lamp, a process which occurs almost instantly. It means any products are ready for use or lamination immediately, significantly accelerating production times. They’re also suitable for use on virtually any surface, making them incredibly versatile, especially for any printer looking to expand their product range to reach new markets.

Additionally, they’re ideal for advanced printing techniques such as the use of white ink, creating textures and layered effects. However, they can sometimes lack the necessary level of flexibility on stretchable materials like vinyl for vehicle wraps where eco-solvents excel.

Is One Better Than The Other?

It’s impossible to say and a bit like comparing apples to oranges! Ultimately, it will depend on the dominant usage in your business and the type of printer you have – some printers will only function with eco-solvent inks while others are only UV ink compatible. The main differences are:

  • Drying time – UV inks dry instantly while eco-solvent inks need heat and a longer curing time
  • Material usage – Eco-solvent ink is best for flexible material while UV inks are more suited to rigid substrates or difficult to adhere to materials
  • Environmental Attributes – Eco-solvent inks are low VOC. UV inks produce no VOCs as well as offer energy-efficient curing
  • Applications – Eco-solvents are most used for banners, vehicle wraps and outdoor signage. UV inks are better suited to packaging, displays and textured prints

What’s Right for My Business?

The decision between eco-solvent and UV inks largely depends on your business needs. If your primary focus is on outdoor signage, vehicle graphics of projects requiring flexible materials such a wall graphics or floor decals, then eco-solvents will be the preferred option.

For businesses with a high output or that focus on diverse products such as pens, mugs, glass or acrylic signs and so on, then the fast drying UV inks will be a more suitable choice.

Both types of inks are powerful tools in the print industry each catering to different needs. By understanding their strengths and limitations you can make an informed choice about which is right for you, and pick the one that best suits your requirements, guarantees superior results and a strong return on investment.
