What Is The Difference Between Monomeric And Polymeric Vinyl?

When it comes to deciding whether to use monomeric or polymeric vinyl for your next application there are a few things you should consider first.

Is the finished sign intended for indoor or outdoor use? How long do you want it to last? Is the client on a budget or happy to pay more for a premium product?

Vinyl is an incredibly versatile material but whether you use monomeric or polymeric as your digital print media of choice ultimately depends on what it’s going to be used for.

The Difference Between Monomeric And Polymeric Vinyl

Mono means one while poly means many and they describe the type of plasticiser used to create the finished vinyl. Plasticiser is used to improve the overall flexibility of PVC and reduce brittleness, and the biggest challenge is stopping it from migrating. The more it remains in its original state the more it prevents cracking, splitting and poor adhesion of the ink. In practice, this means the longer your plasticiser lasts on your vinyl the longer the product itself will last.

What Makes Monomeric Vinyl Beneficial?

In monomeric vinyl the plasticiser is short chain which means it doesn’t bond as well. It’s more prone to migration and can make the vinyl inflexible and brittle. For this reason, it’s better suited to flat surfaces where no bend is required, making it ideal for many general signage requirements. Because it does shrink however, it is better suited to indoor spaces where signs won’t be exposed to the elements. With a life span of two to five years it’s a cheaper option.

How Is Polymeric Vinyl Different?

Polymeric vinyl has a long chain plasticiser which means it binds well to the film and there is less chance of it migrating. It is less prone to shrinkage and more stable, making it more suitable for mild curves and a range of outdoor uses. It’s a more expensive option but it lasts for five to seven years, giving clients longer use.
