Applications, Bleed, RIP Software…. We get asked lots of questions about the world of Wide Format on a daily basis. At Signmaster we are here to help and our lovely team of experts have pulled together a handy A to Z guide answering the most frequently asked questions.

Introducing the Signmaster A to Z of Wide Format.

This is a series of helpful blogs, guides and articles that we hope you will find useful. We will post a new blog every fortnight and we’d love to know what you think so please comment or drop us an email. We’d love to hear from you!

This week it’s all about Q is for Quality

Having been a wide format printer myself, before I bought Signmaster Systems, I understand the debate of Quality better than most…… it is something which always amazed me when working directly with end users – the scale of what people found acceptable to what they didn’t from a quality point of view was huge!

There will always be an argument about considering the placement of print in the discussions of whether the highest quality is needed. We once printed an order of mesh banners to go on the bridge of a motorway junction…… safe to say we printed them as fast as possible on the lowest quality – at that viewing distance, no one would ever have noticed!

The flip side of that is indoor related work, where the quality of the print needs to be much higher, as the viewer is likely to be stood very close and so any banding or colour defects can be seen very easily and so effectively, you can’t get away with it in the same way.

Speed v Quality

Yet I was still regularly faced with the speed v quality question….. we all know that in order to gain a quality print, you often have to compromise on speed…… you just can’t have both. So, when a customer walks in and needs something by the end of the day, they have to comprise on quality or at least that is something you would need to negotiate with them.

Bridging the Gap

Being in the position of now selling the machines, over using them, I do find it exciting seeing the new machines that get launched – manufacturers are constantly striving for the speed and quality mix – with marketing messages such as “great quality print at unbelievable speed” and for sure the gap is getting closer which is great for print businesses and the end user! I do feel there is a balance, there are niche markets where high quality is critical but I actually think people are moving away from it, they want it as fast and as cheap as possible – high quality doesn’t necessarily fit in with those 2 wide format goals.
